Last week, Milk Gallery hosted the opening of Steven Sebring’s latest exhibit, Illumination: Who Are Poets. The exhibit featured digitally altered, large-scale Polaroids of New York icons Joey Ramone, Neil Young, Michael Stipe, and longtime friends and collaborators, Patti Smith.
Guests lined up early on 15th street to attend the exhibit’s very special reception, which featured an intimate performance in homage to each of the featured artists by Patti Smith. Smith began the set by reciting her own poetry and that of Richard Hell and Jim Carroll, which was followed by a performance of The Ramone’s “Blitzkrieg Bop” and Neil Young’s “Helpless.”
The most memorable moment of the evening, however, was when R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe joined Patti and her daughter, Jesse Smith, on stage for a legendary performance of “Everybody Hurts.” Smith ended the remarkable night with a passionate performance of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day”, leaving the audience in awe.
