22 year old model Edie Campbell looked like a young Marianne Faithfull on the Saint Laurent runway tonight. No debate. Wide-brimmed felt hat, garnished with American native Indian influences, 70s flowing floor-length dresses; who isn’t in love with Marianne then, and if you get a chance to grab even five minutes with her, now. Marianne rules. As does Elliot Cass, Michelle Phillips and of course Anita Pallenberg. What could be ever wrong with that? Faithfull et al are all adored by us and Alison Mosshart, Kate Moss and Jamie Bouchert - all present and front row at Hedi Slimane’s debut for Saint Laurent yesterday.
Soon after 2007 when Kate Moss fell for Jamie Hince, a portion of the world breathed a huge sigh of relief following the chaos of Doherty but then the British tabloids started reporting gossip that Kate wanted to sing with The Kills. Drama. It was dealt with, in media terms anyway, quickly. Alison said no. Can we imagine, for one sartorial moment, that a private meeting was convened by Jamie for the two women to meet at Le Chateau Marmont to peace it the fuck out. This collection is what that indie rock meeting would have looked like.
Oh come on, what did we think would happen?! Fashion forward? Get a grip. Hedi Slimane, new creative director of Saint Laurent, has been living in LA, photographing boys in bands - what do the women, on his periphery of those boys dress like….
It looks like antique Yves Saint Laurent meets Stevie Nicks. Sure, because there’s a generation of rock chicks right now and since 2005 digging out vintage YSL and wearing it, replete with American Indian jewelry and hats - they look f’ing fabulous. We’re in Topanga Canyon and Los Feliz territory here. We’re backstage at a Black Keys concert and hanging out with Karen Elson.
In Paris there are chicks who rock that style too but Slimane forgets, the London girls that hung out and propelled the wardrobes of The Libertines, The Paddingtons, The Rakes, The Cazals, Ronnie Joice in 2005 (generous year quotation) now aped in Le Kooples, actually exist. Those boys in those bands wrote songs of love for those girls, woke up with them and stole their too-small jeans - Hedi, babes, perhaps you fell out of love with those boys in those bands but those boys are still in love with us and we with them. Actually a few of the girls who ran with those bands in 2001 - 2005 have achieved more than those boys. Our wardrobes look forward, come with us.
