Winner of the prestigious ANDAM fashion award and part of this seasons MADE Fashion Week in Paris, French designer Julien David has worked for Ralph Lauren and is now based in Japan. Last night his show titled Spoiled Child managed to be an eminently wearable but also a creative and idea filled collection, and mostly free of the ‘graduate show’ type experimentation he used to be known for.
His pale models had back combed hair and had that naughty 17 year old look. Still kids, but most definitely the sort who stay out all night, smoke in the school playground and have boyfriends their parents don’t like.
There were lots of jackets and skirts in lightweight intricately woven cotton jacquard, especially in light blue on white and pieces featuring cutaway eyelets. Sheer vests were emblazoned with Dinosaur or Mondrian motifs. A recurring theme, there were more dinosaurs on jackets, shirts and skirts. Pinafore dresses were covered in images of silver spoons falling down the body like rain. The collection was playful but never kitsch, whimsical but modern too. A unique combination, all of which was encapsulate by the show’s strongest look, a shirt dress with a print image taken from school note-books.
